She debuted her own sketches showcased in the her cohort's Writing 6 sketch revue titled "FUnemployment", as well as built on her previous experience in the casting and directing fields as well. Cali is thrilled to spotlight her writing in a more accessible and professional setting for audiences to absorb and to continue creating comedy in Chicago!
Story for TV & Film (Fall 2021)
Screenwriting for Feature Length Films (Spring 2022)
Pitching for Television & Film (Spring 2022)
Taking COMM 374: Cali decided to take a pitching for TV/film course as her capstone for her major, and she also made the decision to take it during Loyola’s 2022 J-Term. Since Cali took this as a condensed course, she was only given 10 days for the entirety of the material, but those 10 days taught her an abundance of entertainment industry knowledge.
This course was taught by industry professional, Anna Marton Henry via zoom. She led the class through the process of pitching a series concept to major studios, and she assigned us with the overarching project of creating our own individual series pitches to present to her and the class on the last day. COMM 374 gave Cali new insight into the world of writing and pitching material, and this course is still propelling Cali to take more writing classes and to pitch new works in the future.
For her series, Cali pitched a concept about a show that presents the humor and struggles of a family dynamic with a supernatural flare. Check out the drafted Pitch Bible below!
In COMM 202, the class focused on writing short films and short scripts in general. Cali's professor, J. Preseault, honed in on the importance of subtext as he challenged us to write multiple short scripts throughout the course of the semester. In this course, she wrote both my own individual scripts as well as ones where Cali collaborated with a partner in the class. This class brought back Cali's passion for writing after being artistically dormant for quite some time. Additionally, collaborating on assignments with her peers pushed her to want tor receive as much feedback as she could. This class played a massive influence in encouraging her to get my work seen by as many people as possible! "Pass the Peas" is a short script writtttin by Cali and a fellow classmate: check it out below!
In COMM 326, Cali transitioned from writing short films to full feature length productions. Professor Brain Cagle taught the class writing planning, structure, and plot through Sid Fields’ traditional film paradigm. In class, students took each week to analyze a different film and use that cinematic analysis to aid in their own storytelling. Simultaneously, they wrote 10 pages before the start of the next class and submitted them for critiques before the next round of writing. By the end of the semester, everyone turned in their own finished drafts of their feature length screenplays.
